Days of Obligation: An Argument with my Mexican Father By Richard Rodriguez

Richard Rodriguez's  book summarizes the history of changing San Francisco in the 70s, 80s, the Mexican-american in California, the experience of growing up as a mexican-american, and his own awareness of his identity.

He clarifies it simply, and eloquently.

It is an amazing book:

About the virgen of Guadalupe:
"Mexico was a mother like this queen".

Although I feel his comparison of the Virgen compared to Uncle Sam is unfair. Yes in America we are more concerned with our public life than our private like in Mexico. But comparing these two patrotic symbols one a war symbol another a mother, is a bit unfair. Yes we are seen to not be as close to our families, and care much what we can do for our country but still...

" betrayal of Mother Mexico is a sin against natural law, a failure of memory"
